This is super short due to the lack of proof, so here I go.
So we know that while Ashura wasn't a very skillful shinobi (for the lack of a better word since he really wasn't a 'shonibi'), he had a powerful charisma similar to Naruto's.
And Hagoromo separated the Juubi into Bijuu while they were still in their youth.
So I think that while Idra dried to dominate and take advantage of their power, Ashura tried to befriend them.
When Idra realized this, he became jealous and envious because he realized the potential stunt in growth that meant that they would eventually start catering to him.
So to prove him a better 'friend' for them, he challenges Ashura to a duel to assert his strength and alphaness to convey he would be a better leader for them.
Kurama lends him his power and he beat him up, and he gets salty and leaves, only returning for his fathers funeral.
THEORY 2
Not much different from the first one, but instead of Idra attempting to dominate and take advantage of them, he simply tried to kill them, as Sasuke is doing right now (in a world of parallels it's easy to guess what someones motive may be). Ashura tries to stop him and Kurama (or maybe the other beasts, who knows) lends him his power and they dance.
And that's it. What do you think?
