Why am I just now figuring out that Bijuu are from Japanese mythology?

This isn't directly related to Naruto....

I took Japanese Mythology my first year of college.....and not once did I learn about the 5 elemental gods being sealed into shrines or the 4 other beasts.... I knew about the nine tailed fox in mythology but I just figured Kishi made up the rest of the bijuus.

Did anyone else not know this?

or am I just an idiot (go ahead and tell me if I am, I don't mind xd)
