Yeah, but don't you remember how he had someone inside him (pause) either he was using that person, or that person was using him. I do see how he could be using Yamato to enhance his wood style, which could explain how spiral zetsu was able to use Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands which is one of hashiramas' best techniques, even though he's a "low quality" clone.
