Who's history in Naruto is quite possibly the saddest and most unfortunate?

Nominees

Naruto: Lost his family. Kids and citizens ostracize him during his childhood years

Sasuke: Lost his entire family/clan to his brother. Finds out later that his brother was ordered by the leaf.

Gaara: Take Naruto's scenario and multiply it by 10

Rock Lee: Spends his whole childhood as a reject and useless because he doesn't know ninjutsu or genjutsu

Obito: Loses loved one, manipulated by Madara to commit multiple acts of treason to the leaf only to find out he set up Rin's death

Neji Hyuuga: Genius of his own clan. Can't seem to progress in life initially because he was born in the branch to serve the main branch. Spent until his chuunin exam before he realizes his father's death wasn't a conspiracy.

Kakashi Hatake: Mother and Father both died during his childhood years. Loses his best friend to boulders.

Itachi Uchiha: Had to kill his own clan in order to protect the leaf. Branded as a traitor until the very end.

Add any you deem fit.

Who do you think deserves the saddest backstory award?

1. Itachi
2. Sasuke
3. Gaara
4. Naruto
5. Kakashi
6. Lee
7. Obito
8. Neji

That is just out of the characters you mentioned. Even Lee has had it harder then Obito, he was bullied most of his life, Obito just saw his crush die (Someone who did not even have mutual feelings, and he knew it).

Bee Sama though, well in terms of childhood Gaara had it worst, in terms of overall life sasuke had it worse, Narito may have lost his parents but he never experienced it at a conscience age not like sasuke did anyway to watch his parents die in front of him. Naruto was still a baby, but these are just my opinions. Obito had a rough life? His crush died that's literally it, kakashi's rough life started after his dad died but he did have a superiority complex before that. In terms of who had a bad childhood life and got the best development that title goes to might guy, no one busts their behind to become amazing like gai he couldn't use taijutsu or no jutsu but he still strived to become the best might gai is the symbol of working hard. Of course might gai's childhood popped up in the manga not anime yet.

Sasuke and Gaara, as they are the only two to suffer any kind of trauma really. Naruto, Lee, Itachi, Neji, sure, their stories were sad. But Sasuke and Gaara were affected the most psychologically, and therefore had the most trauma.

Hold up he knows Taijutsu...he's basically a Lee clone.

OT: True Sasuke had aoverall shitty life. At least Sasuke had a social life after seeing his family's death unlike Naruto up until the Chuunin exams arc

It's a matter of perspective really, everyone has a character he can relate to, and who he sees as 'the one who had it worse' so all the responses you’ll get are up to the person’s experiences in life. And it’s a matter of fact that every character has a nature and personality, some of them can just overcome their issues while others can't, it's really relative.
