Alright here's how I see it:

2nd Hokage is ambushed by the K/G brothers with no knowledge on their abilities (including Kyuubi "modes") or weapons (sage's weapons/tools). The 2nd ends up surviving - barely - but still survived (I'm not sure if the 2nd Raikage survived or not). It is assumed the K/G brothers were taken down by him. To me, that is a HUGE feat.

Meanwhile, Darui has complete knowledge of the K/G brothers, it's a head-to-head battle (no ambush) and the Ino-Shika-Cho combination is a perfect foil for their use of the Sage's tools.

If anything this should increase the 2nd's hype. SMH

EDIT -> I suppose the Raikage may have had general information on the two, but they were assumed dead when "eaten" by the Kyuubi. So at least that portion of their power was unknown.
