I knew he was Obito because I started reading the manga in the middle of part 2 before we ever saw Pein. It always bothered me that Kishi wrote the Kakashi Gaiden and then didn't return to it. That mixed with Kakashi getting the MS and Tobi having just one Sharingan in his right eye seemed to scream at me that Tobi was Obito, plus the Kakashi Gaiden didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story unless Tobi was Obito. Simple logic and an understanding of the art of authorship is what convinced me I was right even when most everyone else (this was on One Manga.com) thought he was Madara or Izuna.

I really didn't thought about his identity that much in the start, I just looked at him as a simple minded. . . . . . . . . Tobi, a crazy and mysterious character but, strong too. :shrug:

Then all the members of Akatsuki died but, he was still alive and it was then that I started thinking about his identity. It was too obvious for Obito, that's why I didn't wanted him to be Obito. I really didn't know who. . . . . . . . . ah, just forget it. :y

It's what crips do. Bloods prefer to remove the C from the beginning of any word and replace it with a B, such as Brib instead of crib, etc;

I also thought he is Rikudu sennin or his rival (this one was my theory)

but I never gave a shot for him to be Obito xd

When Obito was revealed I thought it was him.
When Tobi said he was Madara I thought so too.
When Madara was revived I thought it was Izuna or Kagami.
After analyzing Madara's words and the Tobi vs Naruto fight I assumed it was Obito but denied it until it was canon.
