Byakugan. I posted a similar topic a couple months back about me feeling the Hyuuga clan doujutsu being left out (not elaborated enough upon) in the series even though its on of the 3 legendary doujutsus. I'm glad its finally making its mark these past few chapters.To answer your question in my opinion, for the time period you specified a full out battle between the Uchiha and Hyuuga clans would be extremely close but i feel the Hyuuga have more useful tools despite the Uchiha being more well rounded. True the Uchiha specialize mid range which can help them keep their distance from gentle fist users but it would also be hard for them to attack and get past Kaiten. Using Uchiha Obito in the Kakashi Gaiden arc as a model (I'm assuming obito at the time was an average if not sub par clan member even with his sharingan) for the average Uchiha, i can't see an Uchiha of that caliber being able to outmaneuver the near 360 degree field of vision of a hyuuga. With both their chakra reserves low hand to hand combat would come into play and even with low chakra a hyuuga has the ability of a one hit kill. The only defense at that point would be the sharingan's ability to slow down attacks so if the uchiha can not get hit and pinpoint a deadly blow him self they would be the victor. Keep in mind they are most likely using strong fist taijutsu while the hyuuga's gentle fist is almost garunteed to be a critical blow everytime it lands.But since its a war between clans and not a one on one battle, one major loss of the Uchiha's is the lack of adequate sensory types. In comparison Byakugan users are all exceptional sensory types so they would be better aware of laid out traps and oncoming assaults. They can even detect scouting parties better than uchiha. Shisui and Uchiha may be able to turn the tide but at this point I feel Hiashi and Hizashi are good buffers for them. And when in doubt, since byakugan can differentiate chakra signatures, lesser users can just avoid the two if they see them in the distance.
