Actually, it was kinda predictable when Madara tried to overtake Obito the first time. Someone actually made a thread about it when it happened then and after Obito became the jinchuuriki. They said he would do it while he was the jin but he was close. It made more sense to attempt again when Obito was either weakened or when Madara gained Hashirama's sennin powers.

As I stated on many threads, this chapter was awesome solely because of the fact that Kishi didn't let Obito pull off a Nagato and Madara saved the chapter by becoming alive. I almost had lost hope for Naruto and now I've gained it back.
