Actually, Gaara fainted after the first Chidori so had things continued, he could have been dead.

It was only thanks to the rest he had as Kankuro and Temari carried him away that he returned.

the reason why gaara sealed himself up in that sand ball was because his sand couldnt protect him from sasuke's speed which means sasuke could hit gaara any time he wants, against a non transformed gaara sasuke wins easily just as easy as he was doing in the chuunin exams...
