Who stood the best chance against Pain?

So at the point in the manga when Jiraiya fought the 6 paths of Pain, was there anyone else at that current time, that could have put up a better fight than Jiraiya did?

Remember:

-Naruto had no sage mode
-Tobi only had sharingans
-Sasuke only had 3 tomoe sharingans
-Kabuto had barely begun his journey to become a sage
-NO DEAD NINJA!! So don't just say Madara or Hashi because they've been long dead.

The only person I can think of that even stood a chance would be Itachi simply because he is a very good analyser and could perhaps seal the real body if he found it.

This thread's secondary purpose is to exemplify the greatness of both Jiraiya and Nagato as I think they are severely underrated. So yeah, tell me your thoughts.

And don't underestimate Tobi, none of the Pains have a counter for Kamui except for Deva path. Tobi vs Deva Path would be an interesting fight

We do not know its limits, but Gai with eight gates stood a better chance than many others, i do not say he would defeat him 100%, but i am pretty sure he can take down atleast 3 of the paths without the 8th gate, with 8 gates he might (as i said, might) take out 1 or 2 more atleast, can't be sure abou deva, maybe he would not defeat him completely, but he seems to have the best chance(except the fact that he will die)
Also Tobi can do it aswell.

Itachi would be able to hold himself up against Pain, yes, plus he had Susanno. However, Itachi died before the entrance of Pain (right? I forgot) so he's technically one of those dead guys. I would say that it Tobi fought against him, he could hold his own. Maybe even Zetsu could if he was completely serious. Raikage definatly, nobody could out speed Ay (but naruto in nine tails chakra control but that didnt happen yet and sadly, Minato is dead)

I have to agree, seeing what Lee did over in the chounin exams with only 5 gates.
Allot of people seem to underestimate the power of the 8 life gates. Its stated in the manga
that when the users opens the gate of death (8th gate) the user will grant greater power
than ANY kage.

only Tobi. and Orochimaru with edo tensei if he had managed to control sasuke. Itachi would probably defeat a couple of the weaker pains but the summons and the naraka path would wear him out and the deva path basically requires for him to be in susanoo. i doubt very much he'd be able to defeat the three pains jiraiya fought tbh, that summons pain would require multiple amaterasu and susanoo attacks to deal with and the preta path would do a number on susanoo i think, plus itachi's greatest aptitude genjutsu is pretty much useless in that scenario.

Naruto at that stage was lucky because of the deva path not getting its powers back until there were just three pains left and the naraka one got hammered five seconds later, and he had the benefit of knowledge as well which was huge, plus the kyuubi intervened to save him. on the other hand if he had the time to master sm i think he would be able to defeat pain full strength.
