Nah he did need layers like that, otherwise he comes off as a horrible villain the second the mask comes off. The anime did do him a little better but I can't tell why.

It was in the execution of his dialog. The way the manga portrayed it, it appeared as though Rin was the entire driving force behind his whole descent. But in the anime the way he said it made it simply sound like the starting point and an afterthought.

At first I was expecting it to be Hashirama. I figured after his fight with Madara some kind of change happened in him killing his own best friend. He started loosing his ideology of peace and became ...despondent herhaps? Then stole Madara's eye, disappeared to recuperate then after a this time began a campaign to recapture all the bijuu he distributed to the other nations...yotta yotta infinite dreams...blah blah blah

It should have been Izuna. He would have had a legitimate reason to despise the Shinobi World (for killing his brothers) and the Hidden Leaf (for killing his Clan).

However, Obviously Obito was a good choice; and i always knew it would be him, simply from the whole T-O-B-I-T-O Name thing. Am sure i did a thread about is aswell around that time; when other members were saying it was Sasuke from the future #Cough *Sawyer *cough *cough
