First of all, being ordered to kill your teammate is idiotic, but then again, the elders of the village have done idiotic things before. That particular idea did not occur to me, but considering what Danzo convinced Itachi to do, i wouldn't put it past them to have Kakashi, the obedient little soldier that he was, kill Rin.
Actually. him killing rin was his mission. i agree with the emotions part. after knowing that obito was "dead" rin and kakashi was a two man team. kakashi aslo lost his captain. so the only ties he had was rin. remember. kakashi waa a part of the anbu. this also explains him awakening his sharigan true powers. and since kakashi is a strategic fighter he just never used it because he knew over using his m.s would resort into him losing the light in it.
