Real talk though, I think his regeneration had something to do with his health that caused him to weaken over time whether it was his life force, his strength, or his own health. Either that or I think he made some kind of sacrifice to keep his comrades alive, similar to how Tobirama, Hiruzen and Minato all died protecting the village in some aspect.

Don't know for sure but it was stated in DB that he died in war.
