That's knowledge, not wisdom

Wisdom means having knowledge so your post doesn't really make sense.

Jiraiya assumed that no other ninja alive could escape his trap -- that's foolishness, the opposite of wisdom.

Jiraiya was always a mediocre individual. He was neither smart, nor wise. Perhaps a little wisdom was instilled by the track of years. Other than that, I have never considered him to be a special individual.

No disrespect to Jiraiya, but I think he had a foolish streak like Naruto's been shown to have. Even in his 50's, he was capable of being tricked, even if only for a short while.
Itachi takes this.

Itachi...even though his methods were wrong, he was still insanely smart.

Not entirely. Black Zetsu has more knowledge then Hagoromo but Hagoromo is the wiser of the two because he has a better sense of judgment.

Regardless, Itachi is the wiser of the two.

Wisdom = the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise.

^^^^^^^ Jiriaya takes it.

Itachi simply had the "fancy english" on his side.

They have equal battle smarts but Jiraiya had more wisdom to offer to the youth.

Itachi just had political and standard battle smarts. But Jiraiya has something that you just can't match up to: age.
