Michael Jackson's popularity was phenomenal. He was one of the first artists to embrace the concept of music videos (Beat It, Thriller), which only multiplied his fame.

It was difficult to chose between Jackson and the Beatles. However, it's interesting to note that Jackson during his lifetime purchased the publishing rights to the Beatles library of recordings.
MJ's popularity wasn't as great at Elvis's or the Beatles. Both sold vast amounts more than MJ and set far more records

If this is a popularity contest, The Beatles win, followed by Elvis.

They've sold double despite their activity lasting more than 3x less than MJ's and the latter having the advantages of the later eras.

OT: None of them deserve the title as King of the music industry because none of them were especially talented. They were all famous because they revolutionized the music industry in their own ways, but none of them were outstanding... above average? Yes. Spectacularly talented? No.

MJ's been the worst for the hype though. Like the others, it was the music produced that made him famous, not talent. His vocals were flimsy, his dancing skills were just "okay" and his performance skills were better than average. There are a plethora of better talents in the East right now, that can do what he did better.

Unfortunately, the best talents are usually overshadowed.
Why do you think the Beatles were more popular than Elvis?

MJ for me. There's been better singers, but he was just... so well rounded. He was a performer, a musician, an innovator, a dancer. All in one. Simply magnificent.
With that logic Elvis was a performer, a musician, an innovator, and a dancer too....

Don't get me wrong...MJ, Robert Nesta Marley, Beatles...those are all the legends that carved the history of music alltogether; and it's futile to discuss which one is better, afterall someone will like the Beatles but won't like Marley for example.

Let's talk about the newer artists; who do you think that has the potential to become a legend (music industry wise) ?

IMHO, Frank Turner is a legit candidate;

Can't believe so many people think MJ is the greatest. It's just not true. Beatles and Elvis did way more
Elvis didn't write his own music and like The Beatles, killed off any blackness in rock n roll.
Lennon was a filthy communist as well.

Only talented Beatles member was the Hindu wannabe Harrison.

And since I'm being a massive c*nt right now, no Hendrix makes this entire thread invalid.

Jimi hendrix had much more effect than elvis anyways, and stevie wonder, and ray charles, people are just blinded by "x DDDD" le classic rock, elvis is hardly even good. Since I'm also being a massive ****ing c&nt right now, I'm gonna say Jimi hendrix, derek and the domino's, the doors, steppenwolf and woody guthrie, invalidate this thread.

What does he have to stop? He was right, Hendrix's guitar style absolutely revolutionized how almost every rock band worth their salt played and formed their own styles and most did not even know it. Metallica's guitarist, one of the most influential of all time, had Jimi as a major inspiration and used his idea of the use of wah wah pedals to form metallica's signature style. It's not just them, many other bands do this and take inspiration from Hendrix - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly.

Also, a lot of The Beatle's discography was really little different from what a boy band did, only 1965 and after did they get somewhat experimental. I really don't see why they are so regarded, bands in their era alone were better.

The Beatles: 600 Million sales
Elvis Presley: 500 to 600 Million sales
Michael Jackson: 300 to 400 Million sales
Madonna: 275 to 300 Million sales

Just to quantify the argument. The Beatles win with Elvis close behind. The Beatles cited Elvis as one of their biggest influences though.
