Im gonna have to go with Naruto. Although i sometimes dislike his actions but at the end of the day i can't ignore the fact that he's one of if not the best written main character in shonen (and yes, i've read/watched alot of shonen)

i agree, lelouch is very well written. there are multiple layers to him, which make him more than just a drawing thought up by an artist. he draws you in, to the point of really wanting to know why he does what he does, not just because he's the main character. he does good, by putting the wrong on display, whether it hinders his image or not. he exposes the slant of the world that is presented to us.

Ed, Light, Lelouch, Kenshin, Kenshiro, Yusuke & Sakata are all miles greater than your choice.

I agree, Lelouch's character possesses a level of depth that you just can't get from the Naruto series. He has experienced so much hardship and has character grows to such a point where u can literally call him one of a kind.

But that's because unlike other shonen, the mangaka barely develops the side characters and focuses on Naruto (and Sasuke) all the time. Seriously, most of the characters in Naruto have no purpose to be in the story anymore because of neglect from the mangaka.

Fma, yyh, rurouni kenshin, fist of the north star etc. I've read/watched it all. None of those characters are better written then Naruto. Especially not Gintoki. Even out of the HST Naruto is the best written main character. Ichigo is poor anf Luffy's has yet to come.
But i didn't know that Code geass was shonen.
Out of all the characters you mentioned only Edward Elric and Lelouch are up there with Naruto and maybe Yusuke.
Although Yusuke and Luffy are my favourite main characters of all time i am able to subdue my fanboyism for now.

Since I don't really consider Death Note shōnen, I'll say Edward Elric. Easily better-written than Naruto, Luffy, and Ichigo combined.

What is your beef with Gintoki ? LOL, Gintoki was and has always been better than Naruto in every aspect as a shounen protagonist.
