Neither is "smarter" than the other, truthfully speaking. Intelligence branches out into many, many different subcategories — Per example; Shikamaru is superior to Itach in strategic forethought, being able to plan ahead 200+ steps in mere seconds. While Itachi is superior in wisdom, through his hardships he's gained insight very few can hope to perceive. Hell, we could even take this a step further — Gai is far more intelligent in Taijutsu than Itachi, Tenten has superior knowledge regarding ninja tools than Shikamaru, and so on, and so forth.

If Sakura wasn't there to stop Sasuke, he'd have made it in time and his body would have gotten stolen.

There's a lot of mere coincidences rather than Itachi's hand guiding the whole thing.

That's clearly untrue, coupled by the amount of failures in Itachi's registry — Every plan Itachi set in motion failed. Shikamaru on the other hand has succeeded on every forethought battle plan; Temari - Tayuya - Hidan etc. Every time Shikamaru put forth effort, utilizing his gift for strategy he'd always made succession present.
