As much as I'm in love with the story of Naruto and claim to know everything there is to know of it, I still don't understand exactly who Orochimaru is.
The Orochimaru from Part 1 is a far cry from the Orochimaru we saw at the end of the series.
At the beginning, he was a freak of nature. By the end, his personality lost its eccentricity. His thoughts and behavior were quite normal in the War Arc. In Naruto Gaiden: the Seventh Hokage and Boruto: Naruto the Movie, too. No more licking his lips and hissing like a snake.
So who is Orochimaru at the end of the series? Is he pure-hearted? Or would he attempt to wreak havoc on the shinobi world, more specifically Konoha, if the opportunity presented itself? Would he be causing trouble if Naruto and Sasuke weren't around to stop him?
It's as though he underwent Izanami as Kabuto did. Who or what made him change who he is in his core, if he did?

And I'm totally expecting stupid answers like "pedophile" -_-

A shit writing from the victim Kishi.

A victim of kishi's shit writing.

F*ck both of you unappreciative bastards. It takes someone with no honor in his bones to insult the creator of a story that has given him so much enjoyment. All the great Wednesday and Thursday mornings you both had, waking up excited for the new chapter. And we didn't even have to pay for it either. Not to mention all the characters that you do love.
It's like people bashing George Lucas for messing with the prequels and creating Jar Jar Binks. Hello?! Star Wars would not even exist if not for him.

As a writer myself, I will defend Kishi's work to death. Neither of you should even be on this website, which is all about the great story that was born from Kishi's mind.

-waits for you to get insulted immensely-

Inb4 I'm an ungrateful half-wit that can't appreciate literature & has no respect or honour. I shouldn't have been born for having a few criticisms about something I like despite it lasting a huge chunk of my life.

Kishi's writing was complete shite the 2nd half of the war arc, be honest. And he gave enjoyment as well as face palms.

You honestly think the series ended in a good way? Kishi began as a good writer but then his writing gradually became worse and worse after the pain arc.

Orochimaru and all of the major characters went through a metamorphosis.

By the end of the series Orochimaru was not the original person named Orochimaru.

He existed as a fragment who observed the world in a kind of purgatory trapped in another persons body.

He was able to go through a kind of Kaubtoesque Izanami circumstance as all he had to do was think.

As he was a heavy headed type he contemplated his mistakes and his successes and realized that he was not the agent of change his original had thought it was.

So basically we saw an Orochimaru that born from a literally different perspective, a fully functioning clone essentially, a weird form of immortality.

Orochimaru became the opportunity to change.

His major metamorphosis came when he absorbed his chakra back from Kabuto and inherited his feelings and thoughts and contemplated the effect he had on someone close to him.

Orochimaru became someone who was prepared to let go of being the antagonist because he had traveled through death.

By being a copy that witnessed the failure of all of his enterprises he was able to abandon his desire to control everything and set about doing what he really loved most.

Using jutsu for finding a road to immortality and locating a personal stage of metamorphosis to enjoy the sensations of this world, a most unique form of human.

To watch another wind move the windmill.

The fact that the new Orochimaru was born from Anko, someone he labeled a failure is an important backdrop against his own development.

It was ironic that his student whom he labeled as a totally useless and the student whom surpassed him were the foundation of his revival and the student he identified with the most helped transform him from a monster into an inquisitive being who was more invested in CREATION instead of DESTRUCTION!

So long story short Orochimaru part one was the will of destruction or sentient chaos.

His resurrected clone became the will of creation and pleasure.

Ultimately he succumbed to the will of fire as he desired to nurture something greater then himself, Sasuke.

Orochimaru is above all else, a creature of whim. If he were to be placed on the morality chart, he'd be under Neutral Evil, which is where characters who are devoted only to themselves belong. Neutral Evil characters can commit atrocities against the protagonists as Orochimaru has, or they can be of great assistance to the protagonists, as Orochimaru has. It's all about what he's interested in at the moment.
But the fact that he's still conducting experiments and no one trusts him means he's still working toward his ultimate goal: to learn everything.

However, his character was negatively affected by Kishi's writing. Kabuto became a prime example of how powerful one can become using Orochimaru's research. Kabuto went from around Part 1 Kakashi's level to one of, if not the, most powerful non-Rikudo character. And the fact that Orochimaru thought Kabuto's way was wrong proves Kishi made Orochimaru go out of character.
But in the end, it doesn't really matter. Kishi has said Orochimaru will remain completely immortal so he has plenty of time to do everything he wants.

He's too dangerous to leave alive forever. They should really seal him and kill all curse mark people.
