He had the potential to do so, but was too cocky. As far as facts go no Rinnegan = Lose at that point.
Not that it matters, my point is that saying "he only won because he had blahablah" is irrelevant, what matters is what he did not how he did it (that madara instance is only an example, one cloud go as far as to say that madara only won because he was born with uchiha powers thanks to his parents.... It's a failed logic that he tried to apply to Nagato).
