He didn't just have friends, he was hated, target for unjustified resentment, treated badly by all his teachers (until Iruka came), ignored and looked down on.

If a "Genius" from the cloud village who was respected and had friends before he became a Jinchuuriki couldn't handle the strain after becoming one, imagine what that could do to a kid that kept that mass of hatred inside him and was a target of hatred from the outside for 12 years and not only he didn't break, he kept being optimistic. I don't know how he could have that personality with everything he went through.

Naruto had an entire suupport group once he entered the academy. Who supported sasuke? everyone can relate to being hated. Noone can relate to seeing their clan slaughtered

"Mentally stronger" is kind of broad. If you mean perception (maybe closer than the others due to Naruto's sensing), problem-solving, and critical thinking: Sasuke.

If you mean psychological well-being, emotional understanding, and overall health of their state of mind: Naruto.

Sasuke. Hebhad one goal through most of the series, stayed focused and stopped at nothing to achieve it. He didn't let emotions, friendship, anything stop him. He is decisive and focused. If he sets a goal whether it is universally judged to be good or bad, you can bet your sweet ass he's going to reqch it one way or another. And this is all WITHOUT support from anyone. How many times has Naruto given in to the nine tails and needed to be saved by his parents? And Hinata needed to smack his ass for almost giving in to Obito. And then it took Sasuke to cut down the damn tree for him to not give in to Obito yet again.
