Do you think he made a mistake and should've went with Indra? Would that have changed anything? Would the uchiha still be possessed by hatred?

Hagoromo admitted he liked Ashura's ideals even before choosing a successor,that's called playing favorites.Besides in ancient japanese culture the elder child is the one who is chosen as successor unless something happens to them.

Hagoromo explained to us that one man can't possess an enormous power alone. That's how Kaguya became the way she was. She became obsessed with power and the way Indra lived, followed Kaguya's footsteps. If the sage picked Indra, he would've made the wrong choice.

Ashura didn't care about power, that's why he wouldn't have became a second Kaguya and now the sage picked both Naruto and Sasuke because he didn't want to repeat the Indra and Ashura incident.

He chose the right brother as Ashura knew the correct way to peace. Indra was misguided and was a loner and therefore cannot feasibly lead the world in ninshuu.

This is why Naruto will be the one to save Sasuke so the Cycle can be broken.
