In the beginning either Sakura was separated from Sasuke/Naruto guarding the escort (Zabuza), or they were incapacitated (Chunin Exams).

That is incorrect. She saved Naruto when Orochimaru threw him away. He would have fallen to his death otherwise. She guarded both Sasuke and Naruto when the Sound Ninjas showed up. Femme posted another image, and she also guarded Sasuke against Gaara.
