every shinobi/person will lose someone/something at one point or another but, to be putten in the situation Itachi was in and having to do the unthinkable, then to live and die as a criminal/live in a lie (being undercover) to never expose the truth, that's just tough.

lets just say that the tears of blood Itachi shed when he preformed Jutsu expresses more than you think he's the toughest character in this series and a masterpiece.

Gaara. Nothing beats the entire village hating you, your father wanting to kill you, and even the people you thought were friends trying to kill you. All that added on with his tailed beast giving him nightmares. I don't see how Gaara isn't still traumatized.
