My issue with Asuma's death is that he wasn't properly built up before hand, he was just the one off character that Kishi killed because he felt that a good guy needed to die. He wasn't really made relevant to the story until that arc itself. I felt more for Shikamaru when he was grieving than when Asuma actually died.
The Thrid's death was a lot more tragic, but also not built up enough. Too much about his reltationship to Orochimaru was revealed in the actual scene itself, and that's just not effective storytelling. Regardless, his death still hit me hard, and he remains one of my favorite characters. That fight is also amongst the best in the series, in my opinion. The bit with the reincarnated Hokage was beautifully done.
Jiraiya's death is what the Thrid's death and Asuma's death should have been, and it was the perfect set up for Naruto to conquer Pain. Though I think that the actual conclusion the Pain fight was bullshit, that doesn't make the death itself any less tragic, if anything the lack of real closure makes it more tragic, though more on a "What the **** are you doing Kishi?" level than a storytelling level.
Itachi's death precedes itself and needs to explanation.
