He was built up very very early in the manga, he was even in Part 1 as a statue. Then he got really important when Sasuke faced Kurama in Narutos mind, while the Bijuu compared him to Madara.. or when Sasuke fought Itachi.
He got more and more important until he arrived at the battlefield as an Edo Zombie.
Around this time, he was a beast, a Monster.. a god.
And then, after he was revived by Rinne Tensei, he was even more awesome by *****slapping all 9 Bijuu, killing Sasuke/Naruto and becoming a new, true Rikudou Sennin (unlike this crybaby Obito)

But after that, he got trolled over and over, but still achieved his Goal, until Kishimoto himself defeated him with the biggest bullshit I've ever seen.
