Is it me or did it feel like this entire time (ever since the revealing of who's under the mask and onward when they showed Obito's intentions and now his change of heart) it felt like a side story or something in order to keep the series going on for no reason and to cause there to be a big war in the series!?

2. Kakashi will say something to Obito before he dies or after and Kakshi will take off his mask.

anything it's possible right now , it could be a way of saying sorry to kakashi or the very least he can do to help them out & believe in his friend or whatever + medic ninjas are right there in the battlefield to change the eye .

PS : And with both eyes being connected he wouldn't need them cover anymore right ? since he would be able to activate them or deactivate anytime now . ​

Kakashi doesn't have the chakra pull to keep both sharing an active
If he couldn't use his eyes regularly he'd be blind
