Don't you remember? She purposely killed herself by jumping in front of Kakashi's chidori. She did this because the mist village kidnapped her and turned her into the jinchuuriki of Isobu (3 tails). The mist ninjas had the plan to chase Rin and Kakashi back to Konoha and forcibly have Rin to unleash Isobu so that Isobu would go on a rampage and destroy Konoha. Rin killed herself in order to foil this plan. Kakashi was against this, but Rin jumped in front of Kakashi's chidori anyway against Kakashi's will.

That's what I remember but people keep saying there's no canon proof. I thought it was still up for question.
