he did want to, idiot! he stabbed kakashi in the spine with a kunai and showed legitimate surprise that it was a water clone, then seconds later, he brutally tortures and makes kakashi suffer through unbelievable pain then orders kisame to MURDER THEM. only gai's timely arrival stopped it and again, itachi is surprised by this arrival. he did not know gai was coming. and when he did he takes that opportunity to leave, instead of minutes beforehand when kakashi showed up. he could have but chose to stay and try to kil his own people.
in his fight with Sasuke, if he had gone all out in the beginning he would have killed him as well
better that he had given sasukes insanity and evil but itachis selfishness wins over and decided to endanger countless innocent lives by unleashing sasuke on everyone instead of ending a grave threat then and there

when he fought konoha shinobi it was because hes a brutal sadistic monster who tortures his own comrades for 3 days and orders their attempted murders rather than just leaving. he left without a problem when gai showed up, so why couldnt he do that before? why couldnt he just lead them away with subtle finger genjutsu or a crow clone? your telling me someone of his power and calibre cant distract his pursuers and escape without a fight? its no wonder he sucks as a spy and a human being. he wanted that fight and tried to kill kakashi twice in cold blood.
Itachi had plenty of chances to kill people from Konoha but he chose not to.
itachi was a brutal evil socippath who tried his hardest to finish kakashi off without expending too much chakra, and even stabbed him in the spine thinking it was the real kakashi. also he killed thousands of konoha citizens when he let orochimaru live for absolutely no reason and endangered the entire world. also when he chose not to kill danzo he condemned hundreds.
He also helped out in the war by stopping Kabuto's Edo Tensei.
