Uhh.. yeah he did. He killed Itachi, thats when he unlocked his mangekyo. He was the closest person to him at the time, whether he saw him as good or bad.

How? He despised Itachi at the time of his killing. If MS is awakened by loss of someone close to you, then it was obviously gained when Itachi sealed Orochimaru's chakra remnants with Susan'o and the Totsuka Blade.

You don't have to kill, you just have to witness the death of your closest friend, which in Kakashi's case would be Obito or Rin.

if that's the case then whole uchiha clan would have got MS since in their lifetime at least they lost one close friend or family member...
