Who could have killed Hashirama?

The man defeated the strongest ninja madara and the ninetails and lived. But was defeated by some other means. Edo tensei when in effect brings back the person to the form they were when they died. So he wasn't too old.

Possibly died of a sickness, I don't think it's been revealed. But I assume they'd have told us if he was killed, if it actually happened. Somebody would know of something bad happening to the first in that sense.

I doubt anybody outright "slew" him, so to speak. I think he was in a situation where he sacrificed himself, kinda like Tobirama.

I'm not sure, but everything seems to indicate that he died of old age. He knew Tsunade when she was younger and his wife was able to mentor Kushina. These both seem to suggest that he didn't die until quite some time after his fight with Madara.

It is true that normally, Edos are brought back in the condition they were when they died. However, there might be unique ways of bringing back people like Hashirama and Madara. We know that Madara died of old age in the cave with Obito and the Hashirama wall, and yet he was brought back in his prime. This could be the same with Hashirama.

He was likely outnumbered by Kage-level opponents, and weakened somehow (sickness, age, etc.)
