Which would you rather have?

Would you rather have a pure evil villain that is weak and fails at all of his goals (like a certain snake) or would you rather have an incredibly powerful villain that wants peace but annihilates everyone (including the main characters) and succeeds in all of his endeavours until the very end when he is finally defeated after an epic battle (as it should be)? Personally, I prefer the latter. Based on the info that I gathered from another recent thread of mine however, many people prefer the former.

I personally judge villains like I judge governments. I judge them based on the things they accomplish.

Anyway, I judge villains based on how they entertain me. Orochimaru does, Madara does not. If you want a piece of cardboard trying to act like a DBZ character as your favorite villain, more power to you.

I'd prefer a recurring villain that succeeds and fails forcing the villain to adapt. At the very end the villain becomes nearly invincible and is defeated by the main characters at the end of the series after an epic battle.

This is where you and I differ I guess. To me, Madara is not card board. He is epic! He gets his stuff done like a real villain! That entertains me! Orochimaru just fails and fails and fails some more. That bores me!

To me, the quality of antagonists shouldn't be determined by how much power they have or how much they've accomplished. What makes a quality antagonist is their history, their relation to protagonists, and their reason for being an antagonist. For example, I still think Nagato/Pain was the best antagonist this series had. Even though he didn't accomplish much in the end, he was a very interesting character with a powerful background and a solid reason for turning to the "dark side". I don't really like the word "villain" either because that makes you think the person is truly evil. A lot of antagonists in Shonen manga are not really evil, they are misguided or twisted in believing what they are doing is better for the world...or "bored".
