Right, everybody is offering way too many options that you won't be able to decide so easily. Why don't you tell us what you are looking for out of the phone first. Try making it a list based on importance

For Example
1) Camera
2) Apps
3) Speed

That way, we can offer a more accurate suggestion

Nice suggestion!

1.Speed/processing power. Since I'll be attending an intense university, I will need my phone to open many documents, pdf files, ppts, and other things while multitasking such as taking notes and snapping a picture of a lab sheet. I will also need the power to run a few apps in the background while watching a video. Needless to say, I need power to do this lol
2. Screen clarity/resolution
3. Camera
4. build material, apps, sound...in no particular order

This isn't a computer we're talking about.

Blackberry and windows aren't even legitimate entries, anymore.

iPhone is 'the thing.'

Android is 'the other thing.'

The only hardware options come from the Android side of the circuit.

From there it boils down to feature set. If you want the ability to remove the battery and to use a micro SD card - you're looking at the Samsung offerings (at least that's the market 6 months ago - unless you talk one of the fly-by-night offerings that ship direct from China). If you want a stylus - that pretty much leaves you with the Note.

If you don't care about those things - then your main argument is price range. Speed/performance is relatively null as just about any new phone is going to be a head or shoulder above the one currently being used. I believe a couple of these offerings have a Stylus - but I can't recall any of the specifics.

The last consideration is value - cram the most features into the best price range. Most of the offerings are pretty competitive within android. You may end up having to bargain for screen size or something along those lines - but usually these are going to be an improvement over previous generation phones.

Galaxy Note.

Though, honestly, you're broaching on E-reader/tablet - even laptop territory.

Consider a tablet with a more modest phone that can be linked via blue-tooth or what is being called S-Beam (peer-to-peer wifi):

Chill bro, just trying to help. Also, it's not like it's a bad method to know what he wants. He could say in the list as number one being screen size, or needs to have a stylus.

Nevertheless, you has a point.

So are you looking for any specifics like a removable battery or stylus? Something like that.

I agree with Aim64C, Note is you're best bet. I'm sure you will be using a laptop or something alongside this anyways, but the Note definitely fills these things. With a 6 in screen HD (the ppi is high enough that you can't decipher the pixels, so it's always going to be fine, though not sure of coloring. Trust me, it's not bad though, still really good) and stylus, this is a perfect work-esque phone to use

I would say iphone since I use iTunes a lot, but since you've never delved into that, get whatever everyone else is talking about.

I HIGHLY suggest you wait until the next iPhone is announced. There are many claims saying a 5.5 in version will be announced. This would surely cover everything in your list except for the multitasking.

HOWEVER, there are codes that show split-screen multitasking within the iOS 8 betas found by developers. This could mean that the iPhone will also receive multitasking as you please in a near-future update. Though it is still a stretch, if it does indeed have this feature, I would take the iPhone as it will also be much cleaner and simpler to use. Don't forget about jailbreaking too

So here's the plan. Wait two days, and then think it over

Bruh, you better buy a netbook than a fancy phone if you are student. It'll be more productive.

I'm assuming that you already has a computer to use, correct?. If not, that is your first priority

yup. I have my trusty all-purpose HP Envy 15 2012 edition. Too bad they discontinued this beauty :L

I just basically need a powerful all purpose phone to use in conjunction with my laptop.

Get an android phone dude - I think they're a lot better. Haha i'm in the same situation as you, my parents want me to get an iphone when i'm going to college soon because of facetime/imessage but android is a lot better imo (I can always use whatsapp). I'm planning on going for HTC one M8 (but I think you can't go wrong with S5 or G3 either). Also, HTC Sense 6.0 is very easy to use and simple like iOS but with much more features and functions.

But keep in note, Apple is most likely announcing iphone 6 tomorrow so I suggest waiting until then as it might be better.

After saving up a few bucks, I now have enough to switch out my crappy htc desire HD for a new phone. Seeing that the iPHone 6 is coming out, I'm not sure what I should get anymore.

I've always been an Android person, but seeing that I'm headed off towards college, my family wants me to use an Apple so that I can facetime with them.

Are there any other advantages for getting an iPhone? or should I just get another good old Android? If so, which Android should I get? I hear all the hype is around HTC one and Samsung Galaxy s5

Thanks

I had the same confusion last year galaxy s4 or iphone 5s i went galaxy s4 . The first day it was awesome . I showed its features to my friends but later the phone started to OVERHEAT showed to service center bo use later its battery SWOLLEN after a TNJ to samsung head office i got replacement battery
I am not playing high end games it makes my phone lag n overheat
My phone powerful processor slowed down camera clarity downed nnot have a useful apps like apple store i hav used many android apps still lacks the performance of the app in iphone .
This year i will exchsnge my phone to get iphone 6 or 5s

According to me dont get s5 .go for iphone if u look for low price than even note 2 is best

I currently have the iPhone 5s and I have no issues with this phone, I will always be Team iPhone so the Galaxy and any Android phones are revolting to me. I recommend the 5s or the new 6, which I will get soon.

I agree with this.

Android is an incomplete OS and top-end Android phones don't, or rather can't, use the full potential of the hardware; this is especially true for Samsung, whose phones in real life tests, don't live up to the hype of the benchmarks simply because of inefficiency. Even then, the likes of the underwhelming Snapdragon chips are hardly anything to brag about.

Get a Moto G if you're on a budget, it's much better than the HTC desire and it's really cheap. I got mine for $80 brand new. If you don't really care about price get a HTC One but don't get an iphone or the S5 (S5 barely changed much from the S4).

The iPhone, for all practical purposes, is not much different.

You can squeeze a few more clocks out of an i-phone program because you know specifically what chipset you are dealing with - but that's fairly negligible.

All of the phones can have exceptional battery life and video quality.

Though if you want to get into hardware specifics - snapdragon/krait are bluntly superior in terms of architecture to Tegra.

The catch is that you have to be a little more creative with your programming (which is not something modern programmers are used to). Careful management of integer and floating point assignments needs to be made. Further, use of paradigms like OpenCL is a must on mobile platforms as they have exploited parallel architectures far more so than the desktop/PC environment.

The integration of a series of digital signal processors (Hexagon) makes for some very powerful options, as well.

Though, again, it's arguing technicalities with only cursory practical impact.

Most of the script kiddies writing games these days couldn't tell you why you should conserve floating point entries or compile special executable files for each set of hardware (literally - you click a button in the compiler, say "go" and walk away) - particularly when you're looking to properly compare processor performance.

The most I'm going to do with my phone after a few years of usage is either jailbreak it or root it. Nothing fancy like coding or stuff. For the first 1 or 2 years, I'll be sticking with the vanilla version of the phone.
Price is not a problem either.
I basically narrowed it down to 3 phones: iPhone6, Galaxy S5, and HTC One.
Any other suggestions?

You may want to also consider Note, though it's not necessary. That's just if you like Screen Size and a Stylus. Other than that, it's the same as S5

Since you do plan on jailbreaking in time, I would go with iPhone hands down. The OS would just be the smoothest, cleanest, and easiest to use. Hardware specs on most phones are generally the same now, so software is the big issue

Galaxy S5 no doubt, it's just a beautiful phone and it does a great job at multitasking, watching a youtube video while using the web browser, smoothly.
