After saving up a few bucks, I now have enough to switch out my crappy htc desire HD for a new phone. Seeing that the iPHone 6 is coming out, I'm not sure what I should get anymore.

I've always been an Android person, but seeing that I'm headed off towards college, my family wants me to use an Apple so that I can facetime with them.

Are there any other advantages for getting an iPhone? or should I just get another good old Android? If so, which Android should I get? I hear all the hype is around HTC one and Samsung Galaxy s5

Thanks

EDIT: Got the HTC One M8! Go look at my newest comment to see my thoughts on it!

I currently have the iPhone 5s and I have no issues with this phone, I will always be Team iPhone so the Galaxy and any Android phones are revolting to me. I recommend the 5s or the new 6, which I will get soon.

iOS is definitely limited compared to Android OS. I have the HTC One M8 and it's a really solid phone. It's quality all across the board. I would suggest getting the M8 or LG G3, or an Android phone, at the least.

But to each his own.

Choose what's best for you. If you want a costly device that is limited where it comes to customization and software features that can take good photos, browse the internet and run some nice apps (you're a simple person), then go for the iPhone 5s or wait for the iPhone 6. If you want a fully customize-able phone, worthy price and a great OS (yo want the most out of your device, and will not settle for 'alright' or 'less') then team android is for you. I'm pushing you towards android here, and I'm a past iOS user now sticking with android. With android your phone is yours, unlike apple devices. You can get anything you want for your phone from several sites on the web, you can even download paid apps for free just by searching for the apk file on google (support developers if you can though). HTC and Samsung are big android names, but if you want the best android phone out there, you're looking at the OnePlus One (google it if you haven't heard about it), that phone has specs rivaling flagship android phones for half the price. In the end, the decision is yours, use google and youtube to decide what you want, maybe you're an iOs person, or maybe android is for you.

Never believe iPhone hype.
Get an HTC One M8, or One+ One if you want the bargain.

At least wait to see the features when it actually gets announced. Then determine what you want

Simplicity and Quality Apps - iPhone

Functionality and Total User Access - Android

Business - Blackberry

Hipster - Windows

Also, with the new iOS 8 update to be released, iOS is going to be much more open and accessible. Though clearly not the same level as Android, it will allow for so many customizable actions not allowed beforehand. A few examples are Swype and other 3rd Party Keyboards finally coming, extensions on stock applications (so the stock camera app can have features found in third-party camera apps) and others. Don't forget, if you Jailbreak your iPhone, you obtain the same amount of freedom on an Android, though I personally find it much more reliable and cleaner than Android. For that reason, I prefer iPhone over other phones

I've had my Galaxy S3 since release (May 2012) and I've kept up with it since. I modded it and have been through dozens of roms over the time I've had it and its really great. I never needed to really upgrade because through custom roms and other things, I've got gs4 and gs5 features on the phone. However I felt like now is the time to get a new phone because this one is so outdated and its cracked a bi from wear and tear. The Sony Xperia Z3 is droping Sept 26th apparently and I've made my mind up to get that one because from what I know about it, its better than any phone right now and will certainly trump the Iphone 6

Depends largely upon what you use it for.

For the most part - phones are more of a distraction from education than an asset. The exception is in their ability to browse the web - but most of that turns into derping around.

I've always been an Android person, but seeing that I'm headed off towards college, my family wants me to use an Apple so that I can facetime with them.

Skype.

iPhone is not worth going to over something as petty as video chat.

Are there any other advantages for getting an iPhone? or should I just get another good old Android? If so, which Android should I get? I hear all the hype is around HTC one and Samsung Galaxy s5

Galaxy Note (insert current generation) is what I would recommend.

I usually am not a big Samsung person - I had a very pleasant history with LG (and a mediocre one with Samsung) - but Samsung phones were the only ones that allowed the addition of a micro-SD card as well as removal of the battery (which is a must for me simply out of principle).

The note comes with a stylus that is pretty accurate and I've found it to be handy. It makes a number of more precision-oriented apps usable or productive. Although it's not a complete replacement for pen and paper - it can work well for jotting quick little notes and other such things (once you get the hang of it).

That's my preference. It is a phone that aspires to actually give you a little more than just web-derp and angry birds.

Obviously - if there is another phone out there that meets these criteria - then you might want to consider it, as well (I am not a huge follower of everything the world of mobile phones is doing).

If they want to facetime you just tell them to download skype. Droids are the way to go.
