So my friends have finally convinced me to start up one piece but I must ask. Would reading the manga or watching the anime be a better experience. I only want input from people who have both watched and read it so I don't get fan-boys of either side. Also reasons would be nice <3.

I would say it depends on what you prefer.

Do you prefer to watch it or do you prefer to read it. I mean you're going to have to read either way, but reading the anime subtitles lets you hear voices and music. The anime is also all in color. But anime has filler, though you can skip it, and it also has some scenes edited for television in comparison to the manga.

The manga is black and white and has color pages every now and then, it also has little side stories at the beginning of each chapter that make for nice little stories about some characters when compiled. You don't see these stories in the anime. The manga is also completely canon with no filler.

Overall both are quite exciting. I would probably suggest reading the manga so you can read it relatively quickly in comparison to watching the anime and all your knowledge about it will be canon. And then perhaps watching major fights in the anime afterwards for excitement. The music combined with the animation in some of the larger fights is really epic, and it would be a pity to only see the manga version of the fights.

Anime up until the time skip IMO. Then I would reread the two arcs prior to that point in the manga and continue from there.

Nice reply. Completely relevant -_-

oh my bad, i thought you were asking something else
i'd say read manga because it saves time

you can watch the parts in anime if you don't fully understand the manga though

Thanks for the imput :) I think Ill do what SharinganisOP about reading the manga and watching the epic scenes mostly because of the point about reading the manga would be faster.

oh my bad, i thought you were asking something else.

I'll give you four options, pick one that fits your preference, although I highly recommend not picking option 4 since it's the least enjoyable. At the same time I can't force you not to pick it so it's your choice.

Option #1 (Watch the anime till the enies lobby arc and then switch to the manga)
You need to realize that the anime at the moment is covering one chapter per episode which is awful. They kept this trend up for a long time, during the start of the enies lobby arc (episodes 264 - episodes 312) is when they started doing the one chapter per episode pacing. However, before that it was like 2-3 chapter per episode which is really good. If you want both experiences, you can watch the anime till the enies lobby arc and then switch over to the manga. That would be good since you're getting both experiences and you're not missing out on the anime when it was good.

Option #2 (Watch the anime till the time skip and then switch over to the manga)
Personally, I watched the anime till the time skip and then switched over to manga but even then it was really enjoyable. I didn't notice how terrible the pacing was because I was watching 20-25 episodes a day when I was getting caught up. It's your choice, the only flaw I can really think of for the OP anime at the beginning. They skipped out on the scene on how Luffy got his scar. (which is covered in chapter 1 so if you really want to watch the anime then just read chapter 1 first and then go watch episode 1)

Option #3 - Manga only
Then there's the manga only option, arguably the best one. However, you will be missing out on the anime's OST's that add on to certain backstories/scenes that make it that much better.

Option #4 - Anime only (I don't recommend this)

Yeah this should be an obvious one to avoid since I told you the problems of the OP anime currently. Not to mention the animation/art is pretty inconsistent at the moment and fails in comparison to the earlier parts of the OP anime.

Either is ok, to start with you can watch the anime up to the time skip and than switch to the manga

overall the manga is ofc better, but seeing some of the characters in the animeand hearing their VAs could get you to take a liking to them faster, but now that there is the digitally colored manga in English ppl no longer need to read the atrocious online scans (they were seriously bad) so you could get a great manga experience (it's not completely translated yet though)

Both.

Start off with the anime. When you are upto date then begin the manga. Then if you want even more watch the movies + speical episodes :)

PS - I did that exactly, it was a very enjoyable experience. I re-begun my interest during the Marineford arc and got sooimpatient haha i heard it was really good but i took my time and caught up. Take your time, there is no rush. Plenty of onepiece to go around =D
