Which format is better PNG or JPG ?

When ever I save avatars in gimp with the format of PNG they looks a bit dull and blur. Don't know the reason. After that I started saving them in JPG format. They look better. Most of the members here save avatars in PNg format . I know . but i have got opposite results.

JPG has lower quality, while PNG can be transparent and has higher quality.

Sometimes on crappy quality pictures, you'll see people say "Needs more .JPG"

FYI always save it as PNG for renders or anything transparent too.

So I think I have use some some low quality renders....That's might be the reason why I felt JPG is good

PNG is mostly for line drawn images, illustrations, text or anything with few or less varying colors. JPG (or JPEG) is for realistic pictures or photos. Hope that clears some things up, try a Google search for info.

PNG all da way. The quality shouldn't be getting lowered. Some examples to see what you mean would help.
