itachi caused most of what happened to him. he chose to serve danzo instead of innocent people. he chose to torture sasuke. he chose to become a ninja knowing what kind of hard life it is.

Itachi for sure in my opinion.

I feel alot of pity for Sasuke having to experience seeing his parents dead and his older brother being the one who did so.

itachi sat on pains couch for 7 years after butchering children by his own free will and torturing his own brother out of sheer cruelty. how did he suffer? because he had an epiphany AFTER DYING that he was wrong?

It's Itachi by a lot. If you guys don't understand why, you probably never will...

itachi didnt even suffer. he thought he did the right thing killing his whole family, and only cried when they brought sasuke up. every other time we saw him he was cruel brutal and insane so one instance of empathy doesnt make him a sad character.

they had sad pasts. sakura was relentlessly bullied and due to her lack of power, had to watch her comrades get beaten up and suffer. not to mention saw her village get destroyed and her friends die (hinata and shizune). obito lost his best friend at the hands of his other friend right in front of him and was powerless to help her. how is itachis story less sad than all that

It's not like Itachi id it for fun...
He had to or else he'd risk the whole village going into war.
Also the other villages would take advantage of this "civil war" and attack Konoha.
so he sacrificed all his happiness, his family all his beloved ones all for the sake of the village.

Turned into life of criminal and pretend to hate his brother so that his plan to make him a hero work out.

Itachi haters are just as bad as fanboys .-.

No he suffered his whole life. He was crying when he killed his parents, and it wasn't like he wanted to do it. It was what was best, and he took it upon himself to try and make the future better, regardless of his effectiveness in doing so. Also he must have had no childhood, considering how early in his life he matured (like age 7). So he definitely had the least fun life, which correlates in some way to sadness, or at least a lack of happiness

He killed both of his parents right after they had a heart to heart with him, he killed his lover so that right there already blows obito's out of the water. From then he was hated by everyone from the village and deemed a mass murderer, and the one person he cared about the most hated him so much that his sole purpose in life was to kill itachi.
