Well, since the chicken is just an evolved organism of another species, the egg came first. And in that egg was the first chicken which was most likely a small mutation. Whatever laid that egg was just its predecessor.

i for one have always thought that the chicken was an evolved form of some other species . The origin of the other species is irrelevant . Hence i would say that the chicken was first

The egg shell contain a protein that exists only in the ovaries of the hen. without hen and her ovaries we cannot have a shell, so the egg can only be created inside a chicken.
