Conditions and vows is not something you have to learn. Kurapika told him about it back in York New and he used it when he saw Kite's state. Gon had 10 days to make the vow, there are characters that did that in 3 days like Cheetu.
I understand if some people say that they didn't like the power up, I'm also not a big fan but it's not an asspull. The only asspull in HxH is Alluka's power.

@Bold: So exactly who held a shotgun on his head and forced him to keep publishing his work in a weekly magazine and stopped him from moving to monthly schedule? There are tons of manga publishing monthly. If you cannot keep up with Weekly schedule why not go for the sister magazine Monthly jump ( previously) or Jump Square?

The excuses are hilarious. Lets not look for every excuse in the book for the guy. He isn't the only mangaka in the world who has to deal with this.
Personally I don't care it's his decision to make, he owes us nothing. But lets not act like he doesn't have a choice here, or he's being forced to take this route.
No, it was foreshadowed the entirety of the Chimera Ant arc past Kite's death. He learned from both Wing and Kurapika that he can make techniques more powerful via conditions and restrictions. Gon had all that potential, and his condition is a "fate worse than death". The reason why Nen exorcists couldn't exorcist his Nen because it wasn't there. He lost everything, and he was just suffering. So yeah, it's not an asspull.
On the other hand, a lot of stuff in Naruto are asspulls.

He told the other hunters that he Pitou was his right after he saw what she did to his much stronger teacher. It's very obvious that he decided to use a vow back than. No way he could have defeated her without it.

Yeah he will probably explain her powers in the DC arc but that doesn't change the asspull that happened in the election arc.
Let's hope she gets killed off, the power balance is messed up with her in the series.
No, what we've seen before was the power of his rage; Enraged Gon. Gon didn't want to defeat her, he wanted to heal Kite. Everyone was pretty damn intimidated by Gon. He wasn't focused on any vow shit, he was going to make Kite return back to normal.
He vowed after hearing Pitou saying that Kite is dead.
