I remember reading some theory about how Danzo might have been working with Orochimaru, but I can't remember where I saw it or what evidence was given. I know Danzo's done some shady stuff in the name of justice and that he's had past ties to Orochimaru, but I wasn't really sure how plausible that theory was...

Danzo would do anything to usurp the current foundation of Konoha and the shinobi world...If Danzo and root were really on security that day, Orochimaru-sama wouldn't have been able to do all that damage to Konoha as well as Sunaga...sounds like a real world conspiracy, dare I say an 11 year and 9 month old global catastrophe...

No, Danzo was not working with Orochimaru at that time. I made a thread about their relationship not too long ago.
Hmm... I just looked over it. But it was Part 2... stuff could have changed in 3 years. Even the 'I didn't know you were still alive' comment doesn't erase all doubt. Although I'd definitely agree that Danzo would not be working with Orochimaru to destroy Konoha.

In support of the Danzo/Orochimaru together during the chunin exams theory...
I suppose I would think of it in terms of a mutually beneficial relationship; i.e., Orochimaru getting rid of the Third so Danzo could step up as Hokage and 'fix things' or whatever. If that were the case, I don't think the partnership would last and Danzo would probably have planned on turning on Orochimaru as soon as he was made Hokage (and vice versa).

Against it, though... I don't really think Danzo would have plotted against the Third. The Third seems to either let Danzo do what he wants, or Danzo just goes behind his back and does it anyway with no repercussions, so I'm not sure how much of an incentive there would really be to do so.

As far as Kishi not having thought up Danzo yet: retcon.

Danzo was most likely confident enough in Konoha's ability to survive and began to think of ways that he could gain from what would turn out to be a failed invasion. So, probably in ROOT head quarters.

But to go as far as saying, "so that old geezer is still alive" after a mere two or three years is really saying something. It seemed they haven't seen each other in ages.
While that would be beneficial for Danzō, I doubt he would actually go through with having Hiruzen killed. See Danzō's last thoughts.
There were two things he cared about most, as shown in his final moments, Konoha and Hiruzen. I think Danzō respected Hiruzen too much to do something like that.
I'm not denying its possibility, though. Danzō is very sneaky.
