My best theory was Hashirama massacred everyone and left tobirama to see whether little tobi will get revenge, but voila....tobi composed himself and be a better man, and that is why hashi is so confident to tell sasuke the story to indicate that his tobi doesnt need to revenge anything and still become awesome and otherwise suggested that senju are powerful enough without revenge agenda and uchiha should follow suit.
