Where and when did Orochimaru obtain his immeasurable amount of knowledge?

It's crazy right. I wondered that myself, about the people he captured. My best guess would be that he acquired them by poisoning them and taking them to his layers. Keeping them sedated with herbs and obviously, more poison.
