Itachi could have just ran away after killing everyone without showing himself to Sasuke, and Sasuke just would have thought he was killed. Or Hiruzen could have just lied and told Sasuke Itachi was on a mission when the massacre happened, and then the two would be able to still live together happily.

On the other hand, without Itachi coming to Konoha and target Naruto as a ruse to torture his brother, it allowed Sasuke to evolve. Sasuke used Orochimaru's manipulation as a ruse to get stronger himself.

Konoha had nothing to offer him. It was just a place that discriminated and oppressed his clan to the point, they got tired and the government used Itachi to betray and assassinate them. It's sad really. That's why a part of me has hatred for him.
