If he is stronger than Luffy now, it would defeat the purpose of Luffy training with a living legend for 2 years.

You shouldnt underestimate him. He has been in the New World for 2 years + he has been fighting Big Mom ships for a while now. Also, if you look at his scars, he had some crazy fights that pushed him to the limit.
