If someone close to Shikamaru were to die, I think it would be Chouji since he, like Neji, was supposed to die during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc but got saved by the medics.

Anyway I don't think Kishi is going to kill off anyone close to Shikamaru any more since he is now a fully developed character at this point.
