It has a lot of characters; a few thousand. :|

You could get the basics easily enough.

Around 1000 characters are sufficient enough to read a newspaper. :|

If you learn Japanese then you could read raw versions of manga and not have to rely on translations.It worth learning whether it's for reading manga,watching anime,or flirting with a cute Japanese girl in her native language.
