Are they doing this out of their own wishes, such as psychological egoism, or are they truly being altruistic?

Cus they are not really respecting your wishes that much, they half force you into it.

But it might be for your own better good?

In the past they probably took you in to protect society from you, now they take you in to protect you from yourself.

Is this truly the right thing to do? Or would the more righteous thing be to just not take people in as soon as they say they don't want to go?

Generally, anything connected to people or this world can be faulty.

The reason is that people themselves are faulty, they can make mistakes. So even if something is perfect, the person using it can misuse it.

So you should always have a contingency plan, in case things go bad. Whether it is human error or system error, you wanna make sure you can always, instantly break and get away ASAP so as to limit the damage done to you during this mistake period.

Otherwise, with respect to rehab, it wouldn't come so highly recommended if it didn't have benefits for those prone to getting high. So consider it, but remember that it is a human program, bound to the limits/faults of humans.

As for those recommending it, there are many possible reasons. It always comes down to the situation and the people involved. But we are all always children - imperfect. So there is such a thing as needing to be nurtured against your will. It's very tentative, tho. You should always study each situation and its relevant factors and avoid generic assumptions.

its hard to say what everyones motives are. but i think a lot of people just want them to be healthy

-BUT- with substance abuse and addiction its both psychological and physical. as someone whose done a lot of drugs in my life its also a culture, drug users usually hang around other drug users. ive never done like straight heroin or like meth or crack. but i know people who’ve been addicted to all three and part of the addiction is them not wanting to go through the dying feeling of sick during withdrawal, so they keep doing it to not get sick. forcing someone to go rehab can help them with the physical part by having a great place to detox. but the mental addiction is still there drugs literally alter your brain chemistry, the more addictive the substance the more it will pop in your dreams, the more you use it as a coping mechanism for just everyday shit everyone faces. untop of that all of your friends are drug addicts or users, so you have to make new friends otherwise youll constantly be faced with the temptation to use again

so with those factors, relapse is extremely high when someone never genuinely wanted to get clean in the first place. drugs addicts lie, steal and manipulate the ones that care for them for their addiction. so its really complicated for the family so they try but you cant force someone to get clean, even in prison drug addicts get high. its an epiphany they have to have from hitting rock bottom really hard or whatever, its different for everyone. but rehab can give people the tools and a place to detox physically but its up to the individual because the more addictive the drug is, its going to be a life long battle to not use again and be around people who encourage each other not too. ive heard of meth addicts who were clean for 10 years and they still had a dreams of using every night. shits deep

I never understood this mindset. Just trying to demonize good. "Are you really donating that money to help people or are you doing it to feel good about yourself?" "Are you helping people for yourself?" In the end, everything is for yourself, and that includes wishing your loved ones to feel better. Everything can be twisted to be selfish, who cares? At least sending someone to rehab is better than letting them stay a stupid alcoholic. Anybody can be addicted to something, allowing them to destroy themselves is not worth respecting their mind-altered wishes.
