Yeah, his death was sort of sidelined since Inoichi and Shikaku were bigger characters. It's sad that the Mizukage and Chojiro never even commented on Ao's death; they were kindof the "Mist Trio" up until that point.

It's weird how much panel time Ao had during the Kage Summit arc; he even got his own fight.

I wouldn't say so. It was a pretty painless death. Unlike Neji, Obito, Jiraiya, Konan, Zabuza, Minato and Kushina.

Instant death. Good way to go. The moments before it must be awful though.
