When exactly was the Rinnegan awakened?

We have seen a panel of Madara in his very old age with the Rinnegan.

In one translation he says near the end of his life span and in another translation he says when he was on the verge of death he awakened the Rinnegan.

Now I don't think this meant near death from old age. Primarily because we know he still lived for some time after this panel with the Rinnegan. Long enough to somehow get the Rinnegan to Nagato. And long enough to feel the need to replace at least one eye with a spare Sharingan.

I'm thinking he already had Hashirama's cells from one of there many battles and infused them before their battle at the valley of the end. Heck maybe he pricked Hashirama and stole some DNA here.

And the panel right next to this perhaps a symbolism of the Senju and Uchiha merging not only politically but genetically within Madara's body.
Also I think this is how Madara survived VoTE. With a combination of Hashiramas cells and Limbo because he activated the Rinnegan when Hashirama stabbed him "on the verge of death"

Coincidentally his eyes are closed here so we can't see. Or maybe so Hashirama couldn't see. But Hashirama did sense something even if he couldn't see it. I believe his Limbo saved him by transferring out the damage like he did here.

Or do you think maybe he really did awaken the Rinnegan at a very old age. But if that was the case do you think he was really mobile enough to transplant them in Nagato? Or did Zetsu perhaps do that for him.

Yeah that's the only other possibility i could think of since i think it was stated he couldn't survive without the gedo mazo. I doubt at that age he would be stealthy enough to implant them into Nagato without him noticing. Then maybe Zetsu also implanted the replacement eye into Madara.

Madara even said nothing happened in the beginning after he took Hashiramas cells. So, yes. I think, that's right. ^^

That's if we assume that he got the cells at the VoTE fight but we know he fought Hashirama multiple times and was wounded on more than one occasion. Your guess is as good as any though.
