I'm sorry, I'm not sure it ever stated when he joined the swordsman... My response was to your statement that he could not have forgotten him... They both faced each other when Itachi and kisame put 30% power in that transfer Jutsu during the rescue gara arc. The fact that 500 chapters later they had remembered one another's power or recognized one another was the joke.
