When did "hater" become an actual insult?

So we have all seen someone use "hater" to describe someone that doesn't like a character, or doesn't like some form of music, or. . .well anyone that disagrees with someone. Have we gotten to the point that we actually cannot accept someone having a different opinion than us? That we need to tell ourselves that this person is simply after the character and so he just hates them to hate them? Do we need to save ourselves from people with different opinions?

Let's go with some examples: I don't particularly like Sasuke's character. I do not like his personality because of his single-minded, child-like anger at a group of people that had nothing to do with his pain. I'm not here to talk about that, but if I ever comment on a Sasuke thread I am branded a "hater" by the fellow members and then anything I have to say that may be a legitimate opinion is written off as "haterade" which sounds delicious.

I want to know your guy's thoughts, comment below!

Hater is an insult because a hater isn't someone that simply dislikes a character or person or thing, but someone that dislikes something simply because it is successful and they don't want it to be.

Hater was always an insult because it implies that the person is a moron too.

Hater is a very misused term. Half of the time someone is deemed hater, the thing they're "hating" on is legitimate shit or they have legit reasons to dislike that thing and that thing's fans are too juvenile to see or accept that.

You're not a hater because you have reasons for your dislike. Some ppl hate characters because they are stronger than their favorite characters. That's a very dinstinct way to say it

I wouldn't really call it an "insult" tho.

I think mostly it depends on people's character and also their mood. Today in developed countries everyone has an opinion and is difficult not to be stubborn, i mean, lots of information can be found nowadays in mere seconds or minutes, i guess this basically makes it harder to move others and persuade them into understand different points because of all the places they found stuff that increases their believe in a determined subject.
The fact is that fanboys and haters are extremes and therefore it's obvious why they always crash into arguments and blah blah blah... most of these guys are delusional and one simply shouldn't even try, 'cause they are like trolls, except they actually believe in all the nonsense they say.
Conclusion: To answer the bolded question, reasonable people can accept them, fanboys or haters or any type similar (depending on the case) can't.

How? To say they are a hater means they hate something.

No. When we say that someone is a hater we mean that he hates just to hate. Without any logic.

Like let's say Naruto becomes OP --> Haters go "he is weak as **** he will get raped by *insert Uchiha here* "

Agreed, it seems like its a pathological need to or requirement to denounce the achievements or actions of others. I guess I like haters though, they provide ample entertainment from time to time.

it became an insult when people began being offended because others treated them the wrong way. ex: there are some sakura haters for example and people would call them hater just because they stated a real fact about the person. the persons calling the other person hater might dislike him/her and to not make their dislike obvious.

Hater became an insult when Justin Beiber sung his first song and people had to defend liking it.

Just accuse them of being a Beiber
